Uru Community-wide Gathering/Party

Hi everyone.  I know Kit posted something about this already, but now I can't find it.   :-[  So...

I am planning a community-wide event on Saturday, April 11th to mark the anniversary of the MOUL shutdown and to celebrate the community that won't give up.  Basically, the plan is as follows:

* A Mibbit chatroom will be set up (and hopefully, hooked into CyanChat) where everyone can gather and chat throughout the day.  (Mibbit doesn't require registration or sign up.)  That's the gathering.

* Now, to make it a party, I need D'niJs who will volunteer to broadcast music and be in the Mibbit chatroom to pick up on the chatter and convey a tidbit or two between songs (just like any other party, basically).

Those are the two main features of the event.  Additionally, I hope that Uru communities in virtual worlds like Second Life, There, Guild Wars, etc. will hold their own gatherings during the event, and that one or more of their participants will be in the Mibbit chatroom - thus, furthering the connection of people throughout the community.

So far, I have two DJs (BeachRM & Lord Chaos) who have volunteered, but no times set, yet (except that LC will be doing his usual Saturday night broadcast starting at 5:00 Pacific).  And, I know that Karaoke is planned to start at 4:00 Pacific time with Dich DJing, but I haven't talked with him yet to confirm those details.

I hope for this to be an "all day" kind of thing, but the exact length will really depend on the DJs - how many volunteer and how long each is willing to broadcast.  I hope we have a good variety, too.  If you're interested, you can post here or contact me in SL.  Thanks!

One of the things I'll be willing to do to help out is to co-stream the karaoke party live.  This way anybody in the other communities can listen in if they wish.  Normally a stream can hold about 50 people on average, with some DJs using streams that can hold 100.  If I use my stream to broadcast what my computer is hearing on another stream, then it can accommodate more people.

Donahoo taught me that trick when we maxed out a server for karaoke once. :)

BTW, I had originally posted this in "off-topic" because I wasn't quite sure where to put it. Why I didn't think to put it in "other events" is beyond me.  DOH!

Wow, Kit, that sounds like a great idea.  If all the DJs did that, too, then not only would it allow for a greater number of listeners, but those listeners wouldn't have to change the channel when the broadcast changed from one DJ to another.  That would be totally awesome!

DMom has suggested that we run a test to work out the technical aspects (and bugs, Yahvo forbid).  I think that sounds like an excellent idea - especially if we're going to be doing something like this.  Btw, since my post, I've learned that there is already a Mibbit chatroom hooked up to CyanChat via IRC at http://rel.to/IRC/cyanchat.php so we can run the test there.  Would anyone be interested in doing that?

I shall be DJ'ing Karaoke that day from the concert hall in Eder Gira with Watashi hosting (see calendar). A great opportunity for more folks to hear our singers and to see how Karaoke has grown.

I volunteered to co-stream, but I just remembered that I have a gig out of town that day, so that could affect things.  I'll let you know as soon as I know the details.  I will help however way I can.  Heek, if the schedule works out right, I might even be convinced to D'ni-J for an hour or so.

I want to thank Donahoo for the idea of co-streaming.  I may have been the one to mention it on the forum, but she's the one who came up with the idea during a karaoke party last summer.

With people volunteering to help out this way, we need a list of people who are costreaming and their stream URLs.  Who'd like to head this operation?  Let's also pick a day to test the co-stream.  One person can play music while the others stream, then we switch to another stream and see what happens.  I'd say 2 test runs, switching between 3 DJs, should do the trick.  Then on the day of the party, anything that goes wrong can be the fault of the DJ. ;)

Great!  We can also use the time in the chat room to discuss other details.  How about testing it out this Saturday?  I'm pretty flexible, so please suggest a time that's good for you.

we have done this piggyback streaming for many events and it works fine
I have two servers currently and can carry 150 listeners
both available

I can support up to 50 listeners atm and there is a feature built right into shoutcast servers that makes doing this VERY easy.  Its putting your server into "relay mode".  That basically means the following "The relay feature allows you to redirect your radio to any other radio. If you relay your server, your listeners will listen to the relayed radio."

AnneB

I'm using a borrowed server and have no control over the settings. I have had no problem relaying what is playing in Winamp as long as I can find the server outside of SL.

cool idea always good to see the community gather.

Do you think we should do a test run sometime next week?  Make sure we all know what we're doing?

YES!  What would be a good day and time for everyone?  I have a meeting at 2pm SLT on Saturday, but would otherwise be available that day.  Perhaps in the morning so we don't interfere with any evening activities?
