Archaeological researchers based at the University of Wigan in the U.K. have made what they describe as an "exciting" find during an on-going project in Newfoundland, Canada. Remains of what was believed to be an ancient Viking longship were found approximately 4 metres down in mud on the east coast of the island. The vessel was surprisingly well preserved due to the high salt content in the ground peculiar to that area.
Carbon dating was performed on samples of the structure and also on a small amount of artifacts found in and around the site. The results of these tests confirmed the date as between AD900 and AD1000. Clearly this is approximately 400 years before Christopher Columbus "discovered" the so-called New World.
Also amongst artifacts found was an ornate drinking cup made of horn that appeared to have an inscription on it. After the cup was cleaned up it was sent back to the University for translation. This was not easy as ancient Viking languages are not at all well known. The closest that translation experts could determine was thus : "Presented to our brave and illustrious adventurer Loof Lirpa. May your journey be protected by the Gods"
